‘The Application of a Medium to a Surface’ is a multidisciplinary body of work including a sculpture piece and a moving image projection sequence using publicly accessible surveillance footage. In the 1983 documentary ‘Style Wars’, a police officer defines graffiti as ‘the application of a medium to a surface’. By using sculpture, as well as the projection of surveillance footage onto its surfaces, the work aims to reappropriate and redefine this explanation, breaking any attempts to diminish or belittle this powerful tool of resistance.
